about us
Kirsten Garcia
New Zealand Registered Dietitian, Master of Dietetics, Bachelor of Science - Major in Human Nutrition
Hi I'm Kirsten! Lover of cheese and hippie at heart.
I've always loved food (and eating) and I feel so lucky to be a Dietitian where I can help others with their nutrition. I appreciate all aspects of food but I have felt conflicted by the food systems we have created that have significant detrimental impacts on our earth.
As an environmentally conscious human being, I've tried to do what I can to reduce my carbon footprint, from reusable coffee cups to composting - you name it, I've tried it. But it’s never felt enough for how large scale climate change is.
Sustainable Appetite is where my love from food and appreciation for earth combine. I want to use my skills and knowledge as Dietitian to explore the future of our food and inspire others eat in a way that supports our earth, and our health.
Isabel Carlisle
New Zealand Registered Dietitian, Master of Dietetics, Bachelor of Science - Major in Human Nutrition
Growing up in New Zealand, it was inevitable that I would develop a deep fondness for nature. My childhood was spent swimming, camping, hiking and using my imagination to entertain myself – turning a stick into a sword, rocks into ant houses and trees into castles.
I also had a huge love for animals, and sent many letters to the Prime Minister, voicing my concern for Yangtze River Dolphins, Orangutans and African Wild Dogs. I was always trying to start animal conservation clubs, however at the age of seven I was far too disorganised for it to have any impact!
I’ve always been food-focused and LOVED trips to the supermarket. Mum says I used to exhaust her – she would feed me and just as she had cleaned up the mess, I would want more food. This hasn’t stopped, and I have decided to make a career out of it by becoming a Dietitian. I now work in the public health space, educating children about nutrition and giving them skills to make informed food choices in a world where ‘healthy eating’ has become confusing and complicated.
Working in nutrition, it is easy to notice the impact that the food industry has on the environment. From plastic to palm oil, it seems like the only way to be an ethical eater is to avoid food altogether. Have no fear! Kirsten and I are here to make it easy, providing you with some evidence-based ways to eat nutritious and affordable food while co-existing with the environment.
